CHARLESTON, S.C. – Angel Rodriguez had 15 points, nine assists and eight rebounds to lead Miami to its fifth straight victory at the Charleston Classic with a 79-51 win over Akron on Friday.
The Hurricanes, 4-0 for the second time in coach Jim Larranaga’s four seasons, will play for another tournament title on Sunday. Miami won this eight-team event in 2010.
And they did it with the solid play of Kansas State transfer Rodriguez, who guided the Hurricanes on an 18-2 run midway through the second half to put away Akron (2-1).
James Palmer hit two 3-pointers and Rodriguez closed the surge with a steal of an inbounds pass for an easy layup and a 58-35 lead.
Sheldon McClellan led Miami with 17 points and Manu Lecomte added 14.
Jake Kretzer and Pat Forsythe had 11 points each for the Zips, who’ll play for third place on Sunday.
