PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Steelers aren’t surprised Brian Hoyer beat out Johnny Manziel for the starting quarterback job with the Cleveland Browns.
Hoyer spent some time with the Steelers practice squad two years ago before moving on to Cleveland, where he played well in 2013 until a knee injury ended his season. Hoyer edged out Manziel for the top spot on the depth chart heading into Sunday’s opener in Pittsburgh, though Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says the team expects to see Manziel at some point.
Tomlin calls Hoyer a “football junkie” who won’t lose games by making bad decisions.
Hoyer will have his work cut out against a team the Browns have struggled against.
The Steelers have dominated the series of late, winning the last 10 meetings at Heinz Field.
